NFC EAST REPORT Week 6:
Who is for real in this division? Many would say that the Philadelphia
Eagles are just off to a slow start and they are the team to beat.
If the Eagles are for real, they better learn how to stop the run
quickly or this may be a very disappointing season for the always
faithful to the end Eagles fan. In their 2 losses this season the
Eagles gave up 200 yards on the ground to Atlanta and 167 to Dallas.
The NFC EAST contains Tiki Barber, Clinton Portis and Julius Jones.
All quality backs that the Eagles will have trouble stopping unless
their defense steps up.
So if the Eagles troubles continue, who will emerge as a true contender
from the NFC EAST? The Giants offense looks unstoppable early, but
the defense is suspect. The Giants come off the bye this weekend
to face the Cowboys in Dallas. I believe Eli Manning and this Giants
offense is for real. 136 points in 4 games proves that case. If
the Giants defense can put just a little pressure on Drew Bledsoe
this week, they will fly home with a victory. With the 49ers and
Vikings coming up on the schedule, the Giants looked to be in very
good shape for a playoff run if they win in Dallas this weekend.
Washington has to travel to Kansas City who has had to sit back
for 2 weeks and think about the 31 straight points that Philadelphia
rolled up on them. The Chiefs will be ready to go in this match
up and will most likely send Washington home to face the 49ers on
10/23 with a 3-2 record. Washington’s defense as usual will keep
them in every game. If the redskins O-line can begin to push defenders
off the ball, we may be looking at a typical Joe Gibbs ball control
offense. Until that happens, the Redskins defense will continue
to be on the field to long and begin to tire as the season progresses.
The Eagles have a bye for week 6. The schedule does not look good
for them over the next month. The Chargers come to town, than it
is back to back road games in Denver and Washington, followed by
a Monday Night match-up with Dallas. If the Eagles can survive this
part of their schedule, they may be back as a top Super Bowl contender
in the NFC. If not, this conference is wide open for anyone to take
the crown. The next 3 months will be fun in the NFC.
